Indeed, that should be the case.

This was actually a "meta-error": the error reporting code itself failed :)
It seems it could not encode all characters from the error message for
output to terminal. What is your locale set to (you can check this e.g. by
executing 'locale' without arguments)? It is possible that this is the same
problem that causes the real error, because communication with Apertium is
also done by encoding/decoding text based on locale.
